The Iconic Eames RAR Chair
Nothing captures the aesthetic of Mid-Century Modern quite like furniture designed by Ray and Charles Eames, two of the era’s most prolific designers. Partners in marriage and work, their designs were found in homes, offices, and even in the US Military in the ways of molded plywood splints for wounded soldiers. Their mission statement, “We want to make the best for the most for the least,” meant innovative design, materials, and accessibility.

The Eames Rocking (R) Arm (A) Chair on Rod (R) Base, or RAR Rocker, was one of the ‘original 5’ released in 1950 and remains a firm favorite with collectors and home owners all these years later. Originally made of molded fiberglass or upholstered and with a zinc plated or black oxide frame, they were discontinued in 1968.
From 1968 to 1984, Herman Miller continued gifting the rocking chair to all employees with new born babies. These were always upholstered and in the desired shell color choice of the receiver and each one was also adorned with a personalized plaque. These chairs are incredibly rare and very valuable these days.
Herman Miller rereleased the base with a plastic seat in 2001 so the chairs are widely available currently and is one of the most copied designs in the world.
